Cardinal Jorge Urosa Savino Friday asked to put an end to "escalating political violence" in Venezuela, following a number of clashes over the last few days in the countryside.

An explosive device was detonated this week outside the Apostolic Nunciature in Caracas, and the building walls were painted with graffiti, DPA reported.

A day before, another explosive device exploded at the statue of US national hero George Washington, in a square west Caracas.

Further, people attempted at looting food in President Hugo Chávez's home state of Barinas, while rival groups clashed violently at Casimiro Mayoralty, central Venezuela.

"The plan here is not Venezuelans beating each other, but to go along democracy and to use our capacity to solve problems like people, like brothers, without letting the force and impunity prevail," Urosa told a local radio station.

The prelate urged authorities to protect the Vatican diplomatic building in Caracas, as government forces are not guarding the place.

"We cannot sink into escalating violent. This must stop, and this is the call I am making to the authorities in my capacity as Caracas Archbishop."
