José Miguel Insulza, Secretary-General of the Organization
of American States, said that the release of Clara Rojas and
Consuelo González by the the Colombian Revolutionary
Armed Forces (FARC) is a first step towards achievement of
the release of all the hostages.
Insulza, who is currently in Chile, told the journalists
he is confident that this release might be “the beginning
of a phase that could make possible the humanitarian swap
for all people held hostages”, Efe reported.
Former lawmaker Consuelo González and Clara Rojas, former
vice-presidential running mate of Ingrid Betancourt, who is
still held hostage by the FARC, were delivered to representatives
of the International Red Cross in the Colombian jungle.
10:07 AM. DIPLOMACY. Admired by the Colombian guerrilla after his coup attempt in 1992, the then lieutenant colonel Hugo Chávez Frías received financial support by the Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces (FARC) for his projects after his capture that year. This mostly explains the relationship and "debt" between the parties, as revealed by a paper of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) of the United Kingdom.
