Chávez loses referendum on constitutional reform

After 1:30 am on Monday, the National Electoral Council (CNE) announced that President Hugo Chávez's proposal to modify the Venezuelan Constitution was defeated 50.7 percent over 49.29 percent.

The intended constitutional reform was rejected by 4,504,354 voters (50.7 percent) and supported by 4,379,392 people (49.29 percent).

"This is an irreversible trend," said CNE chair Tibisay Lucena when disclosing the results.

President Hugo Chávez acknowledged "the decision made by the people."
