After 1:30 am on Monday, the National Electoral Council (CNE)
announced that President Hugo Chávez's proposal to modify
the Venezuelan Constitution was defeated 50.7 percent over
49.29 percent.
The intended constitutional reform was rejected by 4,504,354
voters (50.7 percent) and supported by 4,379,392 people (49.29
percent).
"This is an irreversible trend," said CNE chair Tibisay Lucena
when disclosing the results.
President Hugo Chávez acknowledged "the decision made
by the people."
