CARACAS, Tuesday October 23, 2007 | Update
Officers with the Caracas Metropolitan Police (PM) Tuesday
stopped university students demonstrating against the proposed
changes to the Constitution from continuing their march to
the headquarters of the National Assembly.
When students reached San Francisco corner, on Universidad
Avenue, downtown Caracas, they were forced to stop their march.
Students tried to negotiate with police officers, claiming
authorities granted them permission to stage their demonstration
in the area.
Student leader Stalin González voiced disagreement with
the police blockade. He wondered why pro-government students
were allowed to gather at El Chorro corner, which is located
on the way to the National Assembly.
He stressed the Libertador Municipality authorized their
march to get to the Sociedad corner.
González and fellow student leader Yon Goicoechea tried
to talk to the police officers.
Anti-riot taskforces with the Metropolitan Police and the
National Guard are located at the Sociedad corner.
