CARACAS, Monday October 22, 2007 | Update
University student groups Monday confirmed they are staging
a march this Tuesday to the headquarters of the National Assembly,
downtown Caracas, to reject the changes to the Constitution
as advanced by President Hugo Chávez.
Student leaders at the Central University of Venezuela (UCV),
and the Andrés Bello Catholic University (UCAB) convened
"the whole society" to take part in the demonstration that
will be joined by university students from all around the
country.
"We are staging a great national march to demand respect
for the rights of all Venezuela, to reject this disastrous
reform intended both to disturb civism and peace and to put
an end to democracy," said Ricardo Sánchez, secretary
of the Federation of University Students' Council at UCV,
Efe quoted.
The march is departing early Tuesday from Plaza Venezuela,
northeast Caracas, to the National Assembly, downtown Caracas.
Meanwhile, UCAB student leader Yon Goicoechea said they would
make it to the National Assembly. Otherwise, he added, "we
are going to leave the skin in the streets." His remarks came
in response to claims that pro-government "hordes" would appear
in Congress to "encourage violence" and raid on the university
students.
