University students from all around the country held a meeting
at La Candelaria square, downtown Caracas, to discuss the
amendment to the Constitution heralded by President Hugo Chávez.
Panel members included Yon Goicoechea, student leader to
Andrés Bello Catholic University (UCAB); Nahum Fernández,
president of the Youth Metropolitan Institute, and Alejandro
Rojas, a student of Central University of Venezuela (UCV).
Fernández said that the students who back President
Chávez are familiar with each article to be amended.
In the event of approving the changes, he proposed the implementation
of article 70 to organize student councils and seize UCAB.
In this way, the local community could study there.
Alejandro Rojas, of UCV, pointed out that people empowerment
was important indeed. However, in his opinion, this could
hardly be implemented if people were not given the opportunity
to know about these issues and make their own decisions.
