CARACAS, Wednesday August 01, 2007 | Update
International organization Reporters without Borders (RWB)
complained Wednesday about the Venezuelan government presumed
censorship of private TV channel Radio Caracas Televisión
(RCTV), in the face of impending end of broadcasting after
two weeks of renewed cable and satellite operations.
RWB addressed the issue of RCTV in a press release. It is
possible that the channel has to go off the air on August
1st, for failure to register as national audiovisual producer,
Efe reported.
According to the organization advocating freedom of the press,
seated in Paris, "it is a fallacious legal plot at the very
last minute" of the Venezuelan authorities to "affirm censorship
of the channel, which was excluded already from the Hertzian
waves last May 27th."
RWB noted that the government has not made such a requirement
to other media in Venezuela and set a shorter deadline for
RCTV registration as compared to other channels to comply
with this regulation.
