Argentinean ex President Carlos Menem accused Wednesday the
government of Argentinean President Néstor Kirchner of
keeping "accomplice" silence with regard to non-renewal of
a broadcasting license for private TV channel Radio Caracas
Televisión (RCTV), a move labeled by him as a "fatal
blow" on democracy.
In a column released Wednesday by daily newspaper Ámbito
Financiero, Menem said that renewed operations last Monday
on cable TV of RCTV, the oldest TV channel in Venezuela, was
"good news," following the decision made by the government
of President Hugo Chávez, considered as "arbitrary."
Carlos Menem pointed out that he had recommended the Argentinean
Senate a declaration to rebut discontinuance of the RCTV license
and "support the forces of democracy and freedom in Venezuela,"
Efe quoted.
At the present time, "10 out of the 12 signals with nationwide
coverage, that is, over 85 percent of the TV spectrum in Venezuela,
has turned out to be under the direct or indirect control
of the Venezuelan government."
