CARACAS, Wednesday June 06, 2007 | Update
The proposal the US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice made
on June 4 to send a delegation of the Organization of American
States (OAS) to Venezuela to delve into the case of private
television station RCTV found no support in the international
body and was rejected by the Venezuelan representatives attending
the 37th OAS General Assembly in Panama.
When asked about such proposal, Venezuelan Minister of Foreign
Affairs Nicolás Maduro replied: "This suggestion fell
on deaf ears. If OAS wants to designate a taskforce, the first
thing it should do is visit Guantánamo jail and see how
many prisoners are held in there, or go to the Mexican border,
if they really want to assess the human rights of the immigrants
hunted."
Rice proposed to designate a delegation -headed by OAS Secretary-General
José Miguel Insulza- to visit Venezuela and to "to present
a full report to the Foreign Ministers through the Permanent
Council." Insulza, however, on Tuesday made no comments on
her recommendation.
