Ombudsman: IACHR petition of information about prisoners violates confidentiality

Replying to a petition made by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) for the Venezuelan government to provide information about the people injured and arrested during recent demonstrations advocating freedom of expression and private television station RCTV, the Venezuelan Ombudsman Germán Mundaraín said the demand "infringes the principle of confidentiality."

"The Secretariat of the Commission would be violating the universal principle of the interests of boys, girls and adolescents, and if the Venezuelan State provided such information, this would even affect the reputation and honor of these boys, girls and adolescents."

He added that IACHR is encroaching functions that do not pertain to this body. "They feel as if they were a supranational jurisdictional body, as if Venezuela was a colony or protectorate, or a free associated state."
