CARACAS, Tuesday May 29, 2007 | Update
About 3,000 police officers deployed all over Caracas, including
some 600 agents in the head offices of the Organization of
American States (OAS) for security purposes, said Tuesday
Metropolitan Police chief Giovanny Abarca.
As to the student protests Tuesday in Caracas, in addition
to a march towards OAS, the official said the day had passed
off normally.
At the OAS, he said that some breach of the peace had been
noted. However, "the idea is not to assail people, but keep
calmness," he said.
The police officers set to safeguard the rally in front of
OAS had orders "not to attack anybody" and were not holding
firearms. "We just have water and some shielded officers."
Since demonstrations started, 16 police agents have been
injured with blunt devices and stones.
