CARACAS, Monday May 28, 2007 | Update
Robert Ménard, director of Reporters without Borders
(RWB), labeled Monday as political the Venezuelan government
decision not to renew a broadcast license for private TV channel
Radio Caracas Televisión (RCTV).
In his opinion, a ruling last Friday from the Constitutional
Court, Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ), "represents a masquerade.
Interestingly, a court spent months to decide on the petitions
made by Radio Caracas Televisión for protection or precautionary
measures. Then, within 24 hours, they resolved to seize the
goods and equipments property of RCTV."
"The Supreme Tribunal of Justice does what Mr. (President
Hugo) Chávez wants them to do, and says things according
to the pace Mr. Chávez wants them to say. Another issue
which shows that it was a political decision is the arrogance
and despise exhibited by the President when treating the international
justice."
02:57 PM. HEAVY RAINS. Venezuelan Executive Vice-President Elias Jaua reported that the government is designing plans to support farmers, cattlemen and peasants of the state of Mérida who have been hit by heavy rains that have caused crop losses.
