CARACAS, Thursday May 24, 2007 | Update
Venezuelan Ambassador to the European Union Alejandro Fleming
belittled a resolution the European Parliament endorsed on
Thursday rejecting the Venezuelan government's decision not
to renew a broadcast license for Caracas-based private television
channel RCTV, and argued that "use" of the European Parliament
has been attempted to "raid on Venezuela."
According to Fleming, only 43 European deputies voted the
resolution, and most of them were rightists, as the leftwing
was absolutely opposed to the motion.
The diplomat added that "many" of the rightwing deputies
who filed the motion did not attend the plenary session, as
they were ashamed of trying to involve the European Parliament
in an affair "that pertains exclusively to a sovereign country."
"This was not important not even for them. They were incapable
of showing up."
He added that the European Commission attended the debate
and forcefully stated that the RCTV issue pertained exclusively
to Venezuela. Therefore, the European Commission refused to
take a stance on this case.
Fleming told official television station VTV, leftwing deputies
rejected the fact that their rightist counterparts made the
European Parliament take part in an issue that is restricted
to Venezuelan sovereignty.
In Fleming's view, the resolution the European Parliament
passed Thursday in Strasburg is likely to entail "very serious"
consequences for the European Parliament rather than Venezuela,
because the mechanism of parliamentary urgency has been distorted.
