CARACAS, Thursday May 24, 2007 | Update
Reporters without Borders (RWB) cheered Thursday a decision
made by the European Parliament (EP) to censure Venezuelan
authorities reluctance to renew a broadcast license for private
TV channel Radio Caracas Televisión (RCTV).
"We congratulate ourselves lively for the vote of the European
parliamentarians," when the expiration date of the RCTV broadcast
license is coming soon, said RWB in a press release.
The government decision "condemns the media group to be out
of the Hertzian waves."
The EP resolution, approved with 43 in favor and 22 against,
reproves the Venezuelan authorities for their "null inclination
to dialogue," and states that the end of "this media outlet
critic of Hugo Chávez spoils informational pluralism
in the country."
02:57 PM. HEAVY RAINS. Venezuelan Executive Vice-President Elias Jaua reported that the government is designing plans to support farmers, cattlemen and peasants of the state of Mérida who have been hit by heavy rains that have caused crop losses.
