The Standing Committee of Mexican Congress is discussing
a resolution urging the Venezuelan Government not to terminate
the broadcasting license for Caracas-based private television
station RCTV.
The motion will be submitted to the plenary session for consideration
next week, and argues that there are no legal grounds to close
down RCTV, Notimex reported.
The chair of the Committee on Radio, Television and Motion
Pictures, Verónica Velasco told reporters that Mexican
lawmakers were concerned about Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez'
move not to renew the broadcasting license to the 53-year-old
TV channel.
"In this resolution, we are also asking the Government of
Mexico to issue a statement against this action that undermines
freedom of expression in Venezuela."
