The International Association of Broadcasting (AIR-IAB) suggested
President Hugo Chávez to rethink his decision not to
renew the broadcasting license for opposition television channel
RCTV, on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day.
"I would like to seize this opportunity today, on the commemoration
of this world day, to address President Chávez and the
Government of Venezuela once again so that he reconsiders
and rectifies his decision," said Alfonso Ruiz de Assín,
President of AIR-IAB.
Ruiz de Assín urged Chávez "not to confirm this
serious threat against freedom of expression and to make a
reconsideration that could be deemed the best demonstration
of respect for this common asset in which we relieve."
"We are 25 days away from a really attack on freedom of expression,
if RCTV is actually closed down, disregarding the rights of
workers and the rights of the audience and public to be informed
on a daily basis."
