Organization of American States (OAS) Secretary-General José
Miguel Insulza drummed up a lot of support from OAS member-states
concerning President Hugo Chávez' remarks.
The support came during a regular session of OAS Permanent
Council, composed by the ambassadors of member-states, following
Chávez' attacks on Insulza for commenting on the potential
non-renewal of a broadcasting license to private TV channel
RCTV, AP reported.
Venezuelan alternative ambassador to OAS Nelson Pineda opened
the debate by reading a communiqué from the Venezuelan
Ministry of Foreign Affairs with regard to Insulza's concern.
Chilean alternative representative Francisco Bernales, a
fellow citizen of Insulza, started the string of support to
the secretary-general management and expressed concern "about
the pitch of the (Chávez) expression," asking for respect.
Similar expressions followed from Guatemala, Canada, Honduras,
Brazil, Paraguay, United States and Costa Rica.
10:07 AM. DIPLOMACY. Admired by the Colombian guerrilla after his coup attempt in 1992, the then lieutenant colonel Hugo Chávez Frías received financial support by the Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces (FARC) for his projects after his capture that year. This mostly explains the relationship and "debt" between the parties, as revealed by a paper of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) of the United Kingdom.
