CARACAS, Tuesday January 09, 2007 | Update
Organization of American States (OAS) Secretary-General,
Chilean José Miguel Insulza, does not intend to answer
to President Hugo Chávez, who railed on him and asked
him to resign.
"I am not available to exchange insults with anybody, let
alone with the heads of member states," said Insulza, as quoted
by Santiago media, AFP reported.
Chávez urged the OAS Secretary-General to resign when
he criticized the Venezuelan government reluctance to renew
a broadcasting license to private TV channel RCTV.
Ironically, Chávez headed a campaign in 2005 in support
of Insulza over Luis Ernesto Derbez, then Mexican Minister
of Foreign Affairs for the top OAS position.
"Insipid Insulza should quit the OAS Secretariat for daring
to play the role of an empire viceroy," Chávez commented.
Last Friday, Insulza asked Chávez to think it over concerning
his decision on the channel founded in 1953 for being an "unprecedented
action over the past few decades under democracy" in Latin
America.
"Closing a mass medium is an uncommon event in the history
of our hemisphere; it is an unprecedented event over the past
few decades under democracy," Insulza noted.
