Ricardo Lagos, the Spokesman of the Chilean Government, does
not rule out the possibility that his country abstains from
voting to select a new non-permanent member of the United
Nations Security Council for Latin America.
He stressed that the vote for the UN Security Council should
not be linked to a conflict resulting from controversial statements
made by the Venezuelan ambassador to Chile Víctor Delgado.
"Chile is going to make a decision with all of the options
open," Lagos Weber said in an interview with El Mercurio newspaper,
adding that Chile decision is in the hands of President Michelle
Bachelet, who is to act "having the country's interest" in
mind, Efe reported.
Meanwhile, socialist senator Alejandro Navarro claimed that
"they are trying to build a scenario favoring abstention,
which is endorsed by Christian Democrat sectors," AFP informed.
