FM: Venezuela will surpass votes needed to join Security Council

Foreign Affairs minister Alí Rodríguez Araque Tuesday ensured Venezuela will obtain more than 128 votes it needs to hold a seat at the United Nations Security Council, as a number of international organizations are to support the country, including the Caribbean Community and Common Market (Caricom) and the Common Market of the South (Mercosur).

Rodríguez added that the United States administration has engaged in "a serious campaign of pressure and blackmail" to deter different countries from voting Venezuela.

The diplomat stressed that the Venezuelan Government is certain that the US campaign will fail.

"We are going to get more than 128 votes, I am sure," he said.

While he would not provide the number of countries that are to support Venezuela candidacy, he said "a number of countries have" expressed their support.

Meanwhile, Ahmed Benhelli, Secretary General of the Arab League of Nations, said: "We expect 22 countries to support (Venezuela) candidacy."

Regarding the ongoing Israel-Lebanon conflict, Rodríguez Araque underscored that the situation is the result of a US plan. "The Venezuelan Government is certain that this is part of a plan with a largest reach."

He added that 12 Venezuelans have been evacuated from Lebanon to Spain. The diplomat said that some 4,000 Venezuelans live in Lebanon, but only 500 have registered with the Venezuelan Embassy in Beirut so far.
