Venezuela: Colombian foreign policy more compatible with Washington

Hugo Chávez' Government Friday said the Colombian foreign policy has more coincidences with the United States than with Venezuela, following Foreign Affairs minister Carolina Barco's statement Thursday in Caracas that her country would endorse Guatemala candidacy to a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council rather than Venezuela, AFP reported.

Colombian decision to support Guatemala's candidacy is consistent with "a foreign policy that has more coincidences with the United States than with us. They had made this decision already," said Venezuelan Foreign Affairs vice-minister for Latin America, Pável Rondón.

Argentina, Brazil, Cuba and Bolivia are endorsing Venezuelan candidacy.

"The fact that we have excellent relations with Colombia does not mean that we should agree with their pro-US policy or that they should agree with our autonomic policy," Rondón told local radio station Unión Radio.

If no consensus is reached among the Latin American and Caribbean countries at the UN, then a decision on the country that is to occupy the Security Council seat that will be vacant as of October will have to be chosen with a vote at the General Assembly.
