Peru President Alejandro Toledo late Monday rejected the
possibility to suspend the Free Trade Agreement Lima initialed
with the United States, the condition Venezuela has set to
reconsider its decision to withdraw from the Andean Community
of Nations (CAN.)
"I do understand that some countries do not need to open
to new markets because they have strong revenues, such as
oil revenues. But there are countries in Latin America that
import oil, and they have an obligation to create jobs for
their people. Everyone owns its destiny. What nobody should
do is blackmailing and imposing his/her own views on other
countries," Toledo said, as quoted by DPA.
Following a request from his Bolivian counterpart Evo Morales,
Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez Monday said he would
reconsider Venezuela withdrawal from CAN as long as Colombia
and Peru reviewed their FTAs with the US.
"I do respect the Heads of State, but they should not lower
the level of State to State relations. I hope Presidents Chávez
and Morales to reflect. If they decide they are to leave the
Community, they should speak clearly," Toledo added.
Oil Scenario
HYDROCARBONS Rafael Ramírez, Venezuela's Minister of Petroleum and Mining and president of state-run oil company Petróleos de Venezuela (Pdvsa) specified that oil exports to China would be equal to current shipments of Venezuelan oil to the United States.
