Bolivian opposition Unidad Nacional (UN) party asked the
Organization of American States (OAS) to monitor a plan Bolivia
is implementing to grant identity cards with Venezuelan technical
and financial support, as they fear a fraud may be perpetrated
in upcoming polls for the Constituent Assembly next July.
The head of UN faction in Congress Peter Maldonado told Efe
he made the request in a letter he sent last Friday to OAS
representative in La Paz Bernhard Griesinger.
Maldonado requested OAS to supervise the ID issuance process
under which some two million people, according to official
figures, are to be granted identification cards, as they are
concerned about Venezuela supporting the plan.
"We are deeply concerned that an attempt of electoral fraud
may emerge," he said.
He explained that they asked OAS to send electoral observers
ahead of the election for the Constituent Assembly.
