CARACAS, Thursday February 23, 2006 | Update
"I accept this appointment as an honor for the Catholic faithful
in our fatherland, and as a signal that the Holy Pope (Benedict
XVI) has a special interest and concern for our nation," said
Caracas Archbishop Monsignor Jorge Urosa Savino following
his designation as the fifth Cardinal in Venezuelan history.
Monsignor Jorge Liberato Urosa Savino is to be ordained Cardinal
next March 24th, during Benedict XVI first consistory.
The Caracas Archbishop said he was "very happy, and thankful
to God and Pope Benedict XVI for this honor."
"This honor, which I truly do not deserve, shows how important
the Caracas Church is and the Pope's concerns about our nation,"
Monsignor Urosa Savino stated.
He conceded he was overwhelmed by the significant responsibilities
he will have to face as Cardinal, such as "living the Gospel
deeply, being a good person, working hard, and completing
our major task: evangelization and announcement of Jesus Christ."
He added that following his ordainment as Cardinal, he plans
to undertake the renewal of the Venezuelan Catholic Church,
in accordance with the guidelines of the Venezuelan Plenary
Council.
