CARACAS, Tuesday November 29, 2005 | Update
Opposition ProyectoVenezuela (PV) party announced Tuesday
decision to withdraw from the elections next December 4th
and asked for suspension of the polls for considering that
respect for vote is not ensured.
"Obviously, we, Venezuelans, are entitled to vote, but we
lack the right to elect. We vote, but the National Electoral
Council does elect," PV founding leader Henrique Salas Romer
said.
In his opinion, the situation was apparent from the recall
referendum last year, and local and municipal elections held
last August 7th.
"As a result, we cannot but suggest that as an act of conscience,
those candidates who are the owners of their candidacy make
their own decision. But we do ask the nation to refrain from
voting as long as there is not a trustworthy arbiter, as long
as vote is not manual and verifiable by everyone, as long
as we cannot, before our fellow citizens, regardless of their
position, state that here, in Venezuela, the one favored by
people is the winner."
