Mexican ex Foreign Minister Jorge Castañeda urged Monday
to break off relations and accused Venezuelan President Hugo
Chávez of intervening in elections of some Latin American
nations, Efe reported.
Bilateral links should be radically broken, Castañeda
told radio show "Enfoque" after Venezuelan Minister of Integration
and Foreign Trade Gustavo Márquez expressed that he was
behind an anti-Venezuela campaign.
Márquez's remarks emerged amidst a dispute between Mexican
President Vicente Fox and his Venezuelan counterpart concerning
their stances on the establishment of the Free Trade Area
of the Americas (FTAA.)
The two governments announced Monday that they would recall
their respective ambassadors and left diplomatic relations
at the level of deputy chiefs of mission.
"It is well known that Venezuela's threads are moved from
Havana, and there they think that I decide everything that
is going on in Mexico in this regard. I am pretty much flattered
because both Cubans and Venezuelans think that I have so much
power. Unfortunately, this it not the case," Castañeda
reckoned.
