Chávez commemorates "Day of the Indigenous Resistance"

Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez Tuesday laid a wreath at the tomb of Liberator Simón Bolívar and the monument to indigenous chief Guaicaipuro, amid the commemoration of the "Day of the Indigenous Resistance," called this way under a presidential decree dated October 2002.

The "Day of the Indigenous Resistance" -commemorated on October 12- was formerly known in Venezuela as Discovery Day.

The event was attended by representatives of several indigenous communities from the states of Zulia, Amazonas, Bolívar, Delta Amacuro, Anzoátegui, and Apure.

An fair called "Meeting of Indigenous Peoples and Communities" is taking place at Los Próceres Boulevard, southwest Caracas, including an exhibition of handicrafts, food and bibliography related to the Venezuelan ethnic groups, as well as cultural events.
